POE - A BRIEF HISTORY


01/19/1809 Born to actors Betty and David Poe
Sometime in 1812 Orphaned and adopted by Mr. & Mrs. John Allan
1816-1820 Attends a boarding school in London
Midsummer 1827 "Tamerlane and Other Poems" is published
02/28/1829 Mrs. John Allan dies
Summer 1830 Enters West Point military academy
Early 1831 Is court-martialed and discharged from West Point
Sometime 1831 His brother William Henry dies and Poe moves in with his Aunt, Mrs. Clemm and cousin Virginia
10/12/1833 Poe wins $50 prize from 'Saturday Visiter' for 'MS. Found in a Bottle'
05/16/1836 Marries his 14-year-old cousin, Virginia
1838 Poe's 'Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym' is published in Harper's
08/1838 Poe moves his wife/cousin and Aunt to PA
04/06/1844 Poe works as editor of various magazines and diligently produces new work.
01/29/1845 'The Raven' is published in The New York Mirror
01/30/1847 His young wife/cousin, Virginia, dies after many years of failing health
02/1847-10/1849 Various jobs and women...continues to produce work
10/07/1849 Poe, after suffereing for 5 days from a "brain fever", turns his head to the doctors and says, "Lord help my poor soul," and dies.
10/09/1849 Poe is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetary at Fayette and Green streets in Baltimore in a lot belonging to his grandfather, David Poe.
1875 His coffin is removed to the southeast corner of the cemetary where his monument now stands.
